Information:
Tour begins at Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre in Timaru. The Centre holds the most significant collection of Māori rock drawings in the world and serves as the entranceway to the world of Ngāi Tahu, the Māori tribe of Te Waipounamu (the South Island). Here our Ngāi Tahu guides will share stories of their ancestors and show you the way they lived, practices still followed today. Continue your journey to the iconic rock art sites at Ōpihi, where you will discover Māori rock art where it was drawn and gather a deeper understanding of the people, how they lived and why their legacy is such a cherished part of Ngāi Tahu identity today. This tour is flexible and can be structured to meet the needs of visitors (see Options below).
Availability:
Rock Art Centre is open 10am – 3pm Tuesday – Saturday, CLOSED Sunday and Monday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Rock art site tours run November to April for pre-booked groups (2pm at Rock Art Centre, 3:30pm at Ōpihi Site) and at other times of the year by arrangement. Bookings essential.

Option 2: Guided tour of Māori Rock Art Centre plus guided tour of the sacred rock art site at Ōpihi.
Option 3: Guided tour of scared site at Ōpihi (visitors meet on site).
